What age can my child start figure skating?
Children can begin as young as 3–4 years old in Learn to Skate programs. Older beginners and adults are also welcome.
Does my child need prior skating experience?
No. We offer classes for every level—from first-time skaters to advanced competitive athletes.
What equipment is required?
Skaters need properly fitted figure skates, thin socks, gloves, and layered athletic clothing that allows movement. Helmets are recommended for beginners.
How often should my child skate each week?
Beginners may start with 1–2 sessions per week, while competitive skaters often train 4–6 times weekly, including off-ice classes.
What is off-ice training and why is it important?
Off-ice training includes dance, ballet, strength, balance, and flexibility exercises that directly support on-ice performance and help prevent injuries.
How do I choose between group and private lessons?
Group lessons are a fun and affordable way to learn basics. Private lessons provide personalized coaching for faster progress and competition preparation.
How to choose a coach?
While price and personality are important factors, a coach’s experience and technical expertise are essential when selecting the right coach for your child to maximize progress. A coach’s rates often reflect their years of experience, accomplishments, and level of understanding of the technical aspects of skating.
A coach with less experience may overlook mistakes or be unable to correct them effectively, potentially leading to slower progress or even injury.
Keep in mind that a skater’s accomplishments in tests and competitions are also indicators of the quality of a coach.
What are the costs involved?
Costs vary depending on lesson type, ice time, and competition level. We offer group lessons, private coaching, and package options to fit different needs.
What opportunities are there beyond lessons?
Our skaters participate in recitals, holiday shows, Hershey Bears game performances, competitions, and community events.
Can adults learn to skate or take classes?
Yes! We offer adult programs for beginners, returning skaters, and adults who wish to test, perform, or skate for fitness.
How do tests and levels work in figure skating?
Skaters progress through Learn to Skate USA levels, then advance to official U.S. Figure Skating test levels (Pre-Preliminary through Senior). These tests determine competition eligibility.
Do skaters have to compete?
No. While we encourage competition for experience, many skaters choose to skate recreationally and enjoy shows, recitals, and seasonal performances.
